I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Just an easy shakeout race with fam here. Stayed with Esther as we passed people throughout, easy steady pace. Lagged behind but pushed her from behind. She was 2nd female. In the last mile could feel it and wanted to give Esther the win but another guy sprinted by so closed hard to beat him. Great looping course, just wish we ran on grass instead of trails/road. Showed out-of-shapeness by being sore after. Great swag, fam made out like banditos.

Ran to park and disc-golfed and ran, jumped over some jr. high girls sitting in a spoke wheel near first tee. When they asked me to do it again I dinged my right metatarsal on the landing. Out of shape older men should not show off. Had to walk home so as not to aggravate.

Since Dad and Mom were camping out at Albion basin, and since Nate the Great clued me in, I jumped into this one knowing I haven't run much, but also knowing it's great to run for motivation.

Started slow in midpack and ran with a black Oregon shirted sprinter guy who walked pretty quickly, about a 1/2 mile in I was reduced to walking as well. Walking fast wasn't quite as good as the jog bounce but cardio was still trucking, even with a walk. 1300 feet elevation gain will do that. Ran with a guy for a while once I found my walk/jog rhythm but he fell off. Then passed a girl while still on the trail up, passed a guy I'd chatted with at the beginning, and we were up to the start of Cecret lake trail, all walking here. But before that saw Dad, Rylee and Phin whereupon Dad informed me that Nate was "way ahead." Umm, really? The greatest Hornok runner alive is beating his older, slower, out-of-shape brother? {Canned laughter}

Passed a lot of hikers on the trail but at that point I had my sights set on an older female runner in orange who was eating up people. Passed two at the beginning of Cecret trail, and one finally at the end, then quick fleeting glimpse of the lake before the crash into construction zone before steep zip up another ridge. Passed two more up to ridge (may have been 8 milers). Then the glorious downhill where my weight to strength ratio can be at full advantage, i.e. my weight propels me down .... fast. Incredible how running downhill seems like there was no way that you actually ran that much uphill.

I was able to pass a skinny chick here and towards the end before Sugarloaf also able to pass two more guys, but speedy Orange girl was having her way. I was no match. Once back on the trail back to lodge never really even glimpsed her except at the very end, probably lost some ground to her, maybe 1-2 minutes behind her. Sprinted thru the finish for a quad-busting end. Congratulated Orange.

Then walked up a few hundred yards back to see Nate do his thing. Probably 3 minutes ahead of 2nd place, who pointed to Nate knowing he was the man. A free slice of cold pizza and a change of shoes and drive later and sat around the campfire for a bit eating hotdogs and oreos by firelight.

Thank you all-wise Creator of forest and trees and trails and snails.

Got excited about racing, ready to push and see where I'm at. Immediately Nate took off and Devin (?) Moody took a look and realized he was running for 2nd. Nate ran 15:35

I talked with an older guy who was fleet and bouncy and ran ahead. I settled in at the end of a pack of 4 guys running the same pace. 2 loops and finish on the track so I was determined to push up to one guy's back. Bouncy guy was ahead, the first mile seemed to take a while, so I settled in but "The Human Race" (shirt) held good pace. He actually caught bouncy guy on the 2nd loop. With 3/4 mile to go I was keeping up, caught bouncy, and watched HR catch another guy. Into the parking lot and taking stock, hard. Was 20 meters from another guy, hoping to catch him on the track. Nate was helping, telling me to keep form, accelerate thru turn and 40 meters to finish. I pushed it hard and couldn't break 20 but I was happy with my effort. Not too bad, my weight being 192-94. If I were 20 pounds lighter I'd be 2 minutes faster. :-)

4th in 36-45 age group.

Sun - easy run with P-man aroung S. small-block neighborhood (gotta remember to look at what this is named :-) 1m

Mon - 1600 with sltrack club, then had to hop fence to run around Sugarhouse perimeter, then an hour of yoga. Felt great. 3.5 m

Tue - cathartic running from Arcadia around to tempo run coming back on canal from 32 to 36. Got to the throat hurt pain. Then a second one from Bangtr back to road canal. Getting the heart up and the heat out. 4m

B-ball Wed/Th, played on team with black guy who seemed like he could take over but chose not to, so we lost. Thu shootaround with Steve, did the 10 shot 3 ball and 3 foul shots in 1:32, 1:41, 1:23.

Fri - run with Ben and Nate from homestead down canal roads, across by Valley park, then canal road challenge. They did 7:15, I did 8:25. Not quite the Lagoon reward for me. Easy back to house. 5m

Sat - help haul elk out, easiest it's ever been. Rainy, had to run/hike back to get my backpack, realized I'd lost my wedding ring. It's all good, new ring for the next 10 years and more. 2m

Warmed up checking out the loop. Great course with a part of original Pony Express trail. Talked to a lady at the beginning about fast Jr. Highers, then my pace quickly took me to the front, really only 8 guys to pass. Ran slower with guy at front while we were on gravel road, then just needed to out, left him behind and pushed it around to 2nd loop. Ran in a tie and started to hurt a little second loop, just told myself to maintain pace through the corners. Seemed to pick it up on last stretch to school. Picked it up around school? Other guy in white space-suit elongated his way ahead. Ran with Paul at good pace, wanted to rest a bit since just raced Sat. When Neal lapped us I ran with him, had 3 laps to go. Ran 1&1/2 laps w Neal, he spaced me out on his last lap. I had one to go, some extended sprint, most likely a 21:40 5K, 40 seconds behind white space suit. Talked w/ Paul and 2nd place after. Good candy and camaraderie and costume contest.

Just wanted to get out and enjoy a race. Saw BJ at the start, as well as a girl who I took to be a good runner. P & B tagged along, warmed up slow at first, then muscles relaxed. Got out in about 25th place, passed the non-runners, including a guy who'd started off pretty fast and then was left holding his hammy by the side. :-) Saw BJ kicking it, worked by way up to 10th or so, saw that I needed to catch up if I was to run with anybody. Latched onto 2 highschoolers who would eventually be 3rd and 4th. They brought me up to the girl I'd seen, friend of BJ I believe. I was drafting behind a guy who was overstriding and this girl, in good shape w/ headphones on. For all the moves I'd already made I was surprised that we were just going through the mile.

My thought was I would wait til the turnaround to really push it, but I was going a bit faster than I really wanted. Course on the Jordan Parkway near 109th, went under 106th and this is where the girl seemed to go faster. She was just maintaining pace and we quickly dropped the overstrider. I then proceeded to draft and draft. We did catch another guy and so I knew we were sitting in 5th & 6th place. BJ at 16:40, another guy 2 minutes back, 2 HSrs, and us.

Got to run by all the others coming up as they saw me unchivalrously draft off a skinny chick. I told myself I would increase my pace but I was happy to just maintain as I knew the girl would do, maintaining feels like you're going faster. I had it in my head to accelerate once we got past all the people, but we were still seeing people with 1/2 mile to go. I was running the straight lines on the trail, not letting the string break.

As we came to the 3 mile mark, I picked it up, but I didn't really pass her until 100 to go, and I encouraged her to keep up. I wasn't down for drafting and demolishing, and with the fact that I wasn't going to run through the finish, I ran to the side and she took a well-deserved finish. Good cleanser after lots of running this week. Got to keep that Halloween candy at bay. Lots of food in Jackson too, along with over-excitement sleep deprivation.

I feel like I can do a minute better? We'll see.

Soli Deo Gloria

Ran in my racing flats. Got there a little later than wanted to cuz trying to find a place to get cash, not happening. Started conservative and found myself quickly behind Jake K's wife. Didn't want to really expend the energy in the first mile to catch her, which was probably wise, as she put 15 seconds on me probably every mile. Would have been nice to know if being with her would have made a difference though. At times I felt like I was catching her on the downhills, but she glided on the uphills while I felt like a gas-guzzling SUV. In the 1st 3/4 mile Phin saw me and had to go to the bathroom. I caught him on another loop and asked a course director to help Phin. Crisis averted. He seemed most happy to continue playing on the playground.

When I looked behind me it seemed a light turqoise girl was stalking me, but I gapped her as I was getting gapped by wifey. I feel like I was putting a good hard effort in, though I definitely felt sluggish on the ups. Nice to run a X-country course though. Demetrio encouraged me in the last loop mile and I think I responded. I definitely stayed strong and pushed home to finish, but after a short hands on knees moment I recovered quite fast. I can definitely push more.

No cooldown as I had to go look for cash, failure again (in the BYU campus doldrums) but my waived $10 fee was recovered by winning $10 for Masters. I probably gapped 4th place as much as I was gapped by 2nd. Sasha 18:43, Mark 19:30, me.

Then fun drive home, a quick stop at Chic-filet, then drop of P man and to work I go. What a life.

Rom. 10:6 If by works then it is no longer by grace, and if by grace it is no longer by works.
Translation: no man can get to God, when man recognizes this and accepts grace apart from ANY works, only then can man truly understand the depths of salvation.

The joys of the cold Thanksgiving race. Watched Nate and Ben go off, the race was over in the first 1/4 mile, Nate ahead, no challengers. Had to wait for 30 to start 5k. Good w/u and stretching, it was cold, 20s?, but I thought I wouldn't get too cold.

Saw Matt P at the beginning, thought there were no challengers, talked w/ him a while. Got off to a good start, felt like I was in 30th? Breathing pretty easily, possibly too easily, but was just trying to find someone at my pace as I was passing 6 or so. Made the u-turn in the neighborhood, was starting to thin out. Came down the hill to the JRP and through a water stop, a little before this a 15 yr old girl fr Herriman was cruising consistently and I took her for a mature runner. She was. I got beside her and told her we could catch the next gap of 25 yards. Consistently downhill on the JRP.

At this point coming on the 2nd mile I was increasing the pace and she was keeping stride. We passed at least 4 and then as we were climbing out the trail we had another u-turn and a 25 ft. stretch of water on the path, ran to the right with a litle slipping on very light ice. We had come up to a tall guy I'd talked w at race's beginning. We made the climb up the hill back to the neighborhood, pink girl was 10 yards back and I told her to catch up. As we were in the neighborhood it was downhill but I didn't realize it at the time. I'd been winded on the hills getting off the parkway but opened up and caught a guy. Tall guy stayed with us.

We came up to a highschooler who refused to be passed, he'd go faster when I caught him, this happened twice. I bided my time for the u-turn and back downhill under the overpass. Was at the top of my breathing but looking back seems like I could go more. I knew he'd gap me on the uphill, so did tall guy. But I used them as windscreens, as I'd been doing the whole race w various people, tho not a lot, and passed tall on the straightaway. Caught hs'r again but he made a dash w 110 to go. He had 20 ft but I was catching him towards the end but didn't ever make a full sprint, but I actually passed him right after the finish.

Due to the brilliance of of chip-timing I'm actually listed as beating him. http://utahruntiming.com/thankful-13-2015/ Good stuff.

Feel like it was a good race where with the hills was actually a better effort than my other 5Ks, this was the one I was racing.

Then strapped on blades and went 2.5 back and picked up Nate, yelled for parkway path, then on the neighborhood stayed on sidewalk as the asphalt was rough. Nate had room but I enjoyed yelling to make a path for him. As we hit the underpass I was yelling for the sloggers to move aside, one lady said, "Why don't you go home?" Perhaps she thought I was just rollerblading rather than escorting 1st place half runner.

It's amazing how people didn't really cheer for this guy who has run 13 miles at the pace you've walked 3 miles in. One hs'r in 5th even said that someone yelled at him, "Showoff." 98% of people aren't there to race, they're there for the finisher's medallion. And the 98% support the top, but they should recognize who they are. If someone on the side of a pick-up basketball court acted like good basketball players are just showing off, they'd be laughed off the court.

Came back for Ben in 8th, he was going well. He got top masters as did I. Nate got the goods, we got clumpy but nice medallions, biggest of my arsenal.

Conner Baller won 5K, edging Matt. Good to see him. He's a trooper.

Great thanksgiving. Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift of the freeness of salvation through His Son. We are eternally secure in Christ, no strings attached, better than any turkey any day.

Fri - ran late at nite fr Avalon W. Was with Grandma, then ran in business parking lot then to loop down to JRP S to Turpin's hill thru church lot thru to Nate's and down Redwood back. Glorious cold and preparation: kissed Grandma at 12:45am, she died at 4:00 am, went to enjoy eternal life with the Triune God. 4m

Sat - not good sleep, and consistently so since starting at Lifeway and having more tasks to do, 3 hrs. Bible Study drive in snow, work, nap at homestead watching Ironman 3, then short sleep Sun morning.

Sun - long EAC meeting, saw Lee W. Family dinner and then short run home on canal road. 2m

Mon - in morning w N & B, SE of homestead to Holiday, asphalt trail in neighborhood, pop out to Southside and back up canal to home. Great to run w the boys, 5m, stretched, then disc golf with Ben and Fezzik. Kept gloves on, worked on my left hand.

Tue - ball, guarded short, quick black guy. Close ward. He made some good shots, we won 2, then lost. Right hip hurt afterwards, I stretched it (overstretched?). 1.5m

Wed - Worried about hip but played ball anyway, 2700 W, good, young guys, got on Brazilian lefty's team and ran the board for a while, good mix of inside, outside guys with me as the hustle guy. Hip hurting, constant stretching. Woke up with it feeling better, need to just rest for race but I'll ball it up tonight. 2m

thu - picked up Mark for Ball, convinced them to play 2s & 3s. Got on Steve and the Bull's team (Bob) and won two. I made a few pretty fast breaks to basket, reverse lay-up. Overall seemed like I won mostly, but Mark did make a 3 over me to win one, hip so-so. Mix of guys who are good but slightly overweight, guys who play but not well, and shooter who's all wrist, right foot forward no step shot, Polynesian dribbler/passer baller.
1.5m
Fri - ran in morning, stretched and read and ibuprofen, hip felt great, felt on top of the world. 20 min run S in and out of street apt, townhomes, shakeout, 2.5m

Drove up w/ Dad & P. Short w/u around park and neighborhood, couldn't see any challengers except a Ute garb guy. Got plenty of stretching. Beautiful morning, no snow, not too cold.
At the start Ron said a stroller guy would win the race, he was right. Got out and it was immediately Ute in front, stroller and me. One older guy after the loop around park told Ronnie (stroller?) to show us how it's done. He pushed up and passed Ute guy, I did too at about 3/4 mile. He was about 30 yards ahead, I was trying not to push too much too soon, told myself to reel him in on the downhill to main road. Did so.
He had a better uphill pace than me, but he'd push the stroller and let it go and catch up to it. I was telling myself that I wasn't going to let a stroller beat me.
On the gap thru the concrete he slowed down and apologized, and I was right behind him down the hill. He asked how far we went and we just kept cruising. I was 12:44 a few yards after the turnaround. At that point we were a minute ahead of all else, I knew the hill on the way back would be hard. He somewhat gapped me but I was right there thru the concrete again. Saw Dad with Fezzik and he gave me a look. Half knowing/half quizzical that stroller was beating me. When we got to road leading to park I made my move and passed him. It was tough, and he didn't let up, don't know if I could have tried to gap him harder, but he had some in reserve too. He passed me before we got to neighborhood and put a gap on me.
It felt like he could hold onto the stroller going downhill for a pull, so he had 20 yards on me again. I knew the hill around park would be tough, was trying to get that last 15 yards but he was strong. Seems like he was only 5-10 yards at the right turn, I sprinted/cruised and had almost caught him by the turn to sidewalk finish. We both sprinted like crazy to the finish and he barely got me. They said the time was even, we were wearing ankle timers.
But I was consoled by the fact that he immediately started puking to the side of a garbage can. Lots of retching. He told me later that he'd eaten "turkey ...." and he'd never do that again. So I took 2nd for the 3rd (?) time but pushed him to puking.
This was a pretty hard race. Working the rest of the day my emotions were at the surface (I cried twice) and my body was shaky. So I'm glad to push myself. Woke up the next day with hip still hurting, I believe it's hip bursitis. Hip snap leading to inflammation. Rest the only recourse.
Enjoyed post race festivities. Teased Ron about his discrimination when it comes to giving out drawings, he threw me a shirt to shut me up. Got a pic w top 3 M/F and will keep the certificate for the good frame it's enclosed in. Also won a race registration to a half-marathon in March. That's awesome.
They ran out of coffee and didn't have sugar so I walked with Fezzik tied to me to get some at the church. Fez enjoyed meeting other dogs and obeyed me better than dad, who complained of his hands hurting.
Phin played on playground the entire time. He had a great race! :-)

Glory be to the One who gave me this body, entrusted me with it, and has saved my soul eternally by His grace through faith in the Son He sent.

Post-funeral denoument. Visits, work, bad Sushi/stomach virus. Feeling weak, once ran to P's school and felt like heaving. From Tues to Sat getting sickness out. Played ball Tues at old Highland ward, saw old Andy, played only one game guarding the best young new player. Lost both games but held my own making my shots and guarding well. But my team, while good, couldn't handle the level of athletic and good and flowing that the other team presented. We only had two of three. Also I failed to guard the winning jump 3 on fastbreak. If a 3 wins it, why guard the drive? 1m

Th ball at 53rd w M, took it easy, ran the team and played great, assists, shooting 3s, midrange, a few bad passes early on but felt like my best ball in a while. Was it the new Adidas shoes? 1m
Working w/ Fitsole shoes so not having joint trouble.
Then still catching up on sleep and overcoming sickness. Taking good with the blues. Probably needed a rest, body and soul recognizing the limitations of the mind, once again pointing to the transcendence needed from the Holy Triune One who needs no rest, but shows us how we do.

Sun - disc golf in snow, ran in old hightops, had a few birdies and a few good long putts. Found a love for the yellow Blizzard, maybe it'll make up for the yellow discmania Avenger with light that I lost. Then ran to homestead in the cold, finally feeling like myself again. 2.5m

Tue - Ran in the morning canal road, P at Labrum, then a shoot down the non-dead end road, wet snow, 3m. 3 on 3 at Highland w Mark. Guarded young son, easy games, after complaining the tall black 2yr college player guarded me, still won, then was on his team and kept winning until last game where Mark heaved an underhand 3 and his nonchalance was all she wrote.

Wed - w/ Nate from homestead canal to 53rd down to T-ville park path, then straight home, 4.5, then ball w/ M and young un's figuring out how to win, w/ coach guy, good match-ups, we had young lefty's rainbow winners (can't dribble but quick release), then last game as we're winning they switched to man and D'd it up, close loss. 2 1/2 hrs 2.5m
Thu - disc golf walk w/ P, M & A at Creekside, two times getting disc out of river, nice time, they played on hill 1m, good Candlelight service
Fri - Xmas rest, didn't want to rest but shoveled snow a few times
Sun - nite run w/ N from his house NE in neighborhoods, by old long mom's dream home, down near Erv's to JRP, then to 70th back thru Mobile home to his house, felt superb, did 3 stride pick-ups at end, knees felt a little worked but great run, 6m

Tue - drove around until finally found old ward on 7th W where a bunch of Polynesian, Black and Hispanic guys were playing along w about 3 of the old white big guys I used to play with. Most guys were taller than me so I waited out a game but then got in with a chico who was a good guard and the best guy on the floor. Had ball stolen on a reacharoung 1st poss. but then made 5 points the 1st game (to 11) including quick game-winning 2 from left wing. Then was guarded by a 6'6" guy, I said, "I'm not that good," and he said, "I saw the tape." We kept winning, had some hustle lay-ups and 2 easy mid-range jumpers. Felt like I was faster guy on the floor, played 9:45 to 11:30. 2m

Wed - 70th ward, played 5 games w/o winning, quick to 7 gives you seemingly 3 chances and done. Got charged by little bug on one drive (dropped shoulder and plowed me) but he apologized. Felt like we hadn't even warmed up til we finally put a close one together, playing zone 3-2, jumping on them from the beginning. Had good all-around, mid-pack as far as speed, against Brazilian guard who took over a little bit countered by our green-shirt guard hitting 4 straight 3s. We lost last game, our big guy got frustrated by wrap-up foul, quit, we had 4 guard, one heavy post. 9:20-11:45 2m

That was actually more interesting to read than the narrative of a typical run.

I've been a runner most of my life, but even when I don't run or am not in shape I've still been a basketball player, so in the grand scheme I might be better at B-ball than running. Tho ball is something where a lot of people think they're good when they're not. Unlike running where there's no "phoning it in."

Hiked Donut falls w all fam in the afternoon. Had a few good sled rides w P including 500 yard jaunt to hitting the wall. Hands got really cold as I gave P my gloves. Went to Jazz game w/ Mark, then drove around and 4th S curve crashed my truck into snow and barrier. Probably best outcome possible, only superficial plastic body work damage. Ate a Po-boy at Buffalo Wings w superficial convo w M.

A few minutes w/u, then off we went, pack of 20 at the beginning, including 2 quick guys. Took off my w/u jacket as we went down hill, trying to find people to run with, but passing about 7 until saw Father Time ahead. Slowly caught him going down hill. Talked to him about Garek who's going to Jr. Nats. 4:28, 2:10, 43 speed workout. Went around the Xmas tree, then w/ Bill on the road at left avoinding the ice. He was all about running tangents. Passed two more on first lap, really felt it after that 2nd hill. Tried to pick it up 2nd lap. Passed quickly by a guy at beginning of 2nd lap, then passed him on the downhill, caught maybe 2 more, was 13:54 at 2m. Was not running too hard but hard enough, just at 75%? It was 10 degrees. Took my gloves off, kept it up, passed a guy on downhill in floppy hat, told him to go with me. He did. At turnaround could see 3 guys close and Bill 100 yards behind. Was passed by my guy going uphill, bided my time, pushing the last little bit. 3m mark seemed farther away from finish but sprinted in after park entrance and passed my guy. Time says 7:27 last mile, yikes.

Was cheered on by a few slctrack guys. Walked in snow to overlook, prayed the year in. Picked up juvenile Mark and drove Juvenile Jesse home.

Hebrews 12 Life verse: ...let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin which easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Captain and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
