I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Mon- icebreaker with red racing flats around the neighborhood, training Mika, 2.5 m

Tues- Sugarhouse park, ran w/u to other side of park and cut thru wondering where the start was, was just 300 meters W of building. Jon and Leah, Dad and Mom there. Jon was stretching and seemingly indifferent to getting to the front but when we started, he took off. We ran together and passed a large group on the 1st hill running clockwise, including all those who were costumed, like purple Father Time, neon mohawk and Supergirl and Batgirl. Passed more on the flat and downhill to mid-road inlet u-turn. Jon put some distance on me over the wooden bridge ice covering and u-turn. He was faster up the hills (better strength to weight ratio) but I used that as an excuse. Was about 9 minutes close to the start of 2nd lap, and it started to feel like work. Was running the tangents and slowly catching Jon, on the 2nd lap downhill I passed a guy and was 20 yards fr Jon, my mom said I was 10th. Slowly putting the squeeze on Jon, but was impressed with how I wasn't eating him up. Was 13:10 at 2 miles and took all of the flat and downhill and u-turn to get within 15 feet of him. I knew he would be faster up the hill but thought I'd catch him after. Used the hill as an excuse and as I was going slowly up it, could hear a guy I'd passed previously catching up. Was trying to push it in, really wanted to pull up to Jon and see what would happen. I asked him later if he would have sprinted and he said he mentally wanted to but wasn't sure. With about 150 to go the blue guy passed me and I began my version of sprinting but it obviously wasn't too hearty cuz Father Time passed me just 30 meters from finish! Really, Father time? I thought I'd put him in my rearview 2 miles ago but time and chance catch us all. Jon beat me by a mere and disappointing 10 seconds and was upset not to break 20 but with cold and lateness and curves and hills it's a decent effort.

PS Just learned that Father Time was Bill Cobler, don't feel bad about that at all.

Wed-from homestead SE to Calvin Smith, then canal road u-loop and dead end streets back home by canal, 3 m getting the grease out.

May the New Year bring renewed grace from God our Father and Jesus our Savior, may we trust in Him fully as He gave Himself fully for us. May many more come to know and live in His love.

Sun nite-running not a complete habit yet, hate that wn I don't run I lose a day to maintain/grow fitness, but ran to Park and golfed 1/2 course then ran canal road to 6200 S and up to homestead. Felt great cruise after 3 days rest! Gearing towards Winter Series 5K, visualization of good speed and enjoyment of strength endurance I naturally have. 5m

Mon-after w/o w/ B, calf-raises, squats, sit-ups, push-ups, leg-ups, downward dog arm raises, 2 sets, ran in old black ball shoes, maybe unwise, felt flat-footed, calves complaining, but out canal to Baptist church, down 3600 to hopped fence canal and meandering back. 4.5m

Tues-after great piano afternoon at Bob's house. Found new trail out canal BJH neighborhoods. Felt great, putting in the time to run good longer runs http://www.mapmyrun.com/workout/470557833

Wed-after Winter Retail ran on Bonneville shoreline, just easy, icy fun. Snow melted all around icy trail but not on trail! Too much traffic. 40 min, 3.5 m maybe

Thur-no running, got pretty good sleep, resting for race, 4 on 4 ball, short, ended early, then played piano, found great melody for Immortal Invisible, also found LDS hymnal of Schreiner melodies. He's a treasure trove of bad melodies! For me I can hear what I think is a better melody on every single one of his pieces! It was awesome. Sorry Schreiner lovers.

Fri- w/ P to park. Jogged, then once around Christy Hill, just getting my racing flats form feel. 1.5 m

Beautiful day, smoggy but I never really notice that breathing. Saw BK at start and we determined to run together. Ran 1.5 w/u and stretched. Started row 5, BK took off and I was 10 yards back. Feeling it out, not sure about pace, knew I was running faster than a month ago but holding back. Latched onto 2 girls and guys, Eleanor, Lisa?, Richard? At the mile one girl gave me the time, 6:12, I was surprised but felt great, my hamstrings could feel the work but I caught up to BK and cruised. Others seemed to latch onto me but we hit the turnaround and I came up to BK, he said, "Go get em," and I ramped up to where I could catch some. Girl in orange behind tall guy in yellow. I didn't pass them til after mile 2, paused a moment with them and then progressed. Breathing pretty hard but knew I had more. W/ 3/4 mile to go Richard passed me, then Eleanor passed us both. I know I could have closed harder but I was happy that at mile 3 I sprinted in and passed Richard. I probably should have looked behind me and realized all the people breathing down my neck. BK said even split would be 19:30 so I negative split.

I'm looking forward to the 10K. After all these years of racing, it's still crazy to me that I can still learn how to better pace a 5K. It's just such a tweaker race, I think I do a pretty good job of not starting out too fast, but I think I could get into my cruise and push it for longer, go for broke. We'll see how the 10K goes, separating the rec runners from the deliberate runners. Hoping to be a deliberate runner. My designation for that for myself is to break 40.

Ran out w/ BK to mile mark and back. Missed the raffle but got some goodies to go.

Overall, great race, LDR circuit, slctrack club, peace out. Soli Deo Gloria

Sun- Petraphonics, discman, needing motivation to run, listened to classic high 80's tenor Petra praise, in the dark of nite, ran towards the light, SE to curve around Phillips in the hood, running the race out of my legs 3m

Mon-rest, watching parent's house, Tues- ran around park, disc golf, met a few devotees, then ball, lots of guys, trying to learn when to make others better and when to shoot, tough post-player getting mauled by bearded guy who twisted ankle 2.5m

Wed- went to 3 churches finally back to 70th ward, they let me play after a guy left. 4 on 4 half court, made a come-back but let my old guy score and shot 3s like Ray Allen in practice, like Ray Schwartz in game. Lost/stopped 46-38

Thu-after some 4 on 4, good at first, but then short on shots, getting legs under me, guarded quick post guy pretty well, then ran to bottom of Big Cottonwood, 2.85 m

Fri-after emo H final straw, good dinner w/ 'Brenners, w/ CD but lost battery power, NW around Home Depot and back, cold legs rub, 3m

Sat-ran to park, did speedwork on canal out and back, good to get to mile speed, then some disc golf, then one more speed rep, feel like I can cruise and push it, wasn't really winded, looking forward to 10K, then ran home for Grandma's 93rd B-day 3m easy, 2 m VO2

Sun- before Superbowl, out and about NE 45 min. 4m, mon-rest

Tues-fartlek, getting the emo out, NE hood, 3-4 higher cruises, 3m, then good ball, still rushed a few layups but also scored several gamewinners, a couple spin moves to middle, good D, lots of guys, held good post-up player scoreless one game, then next he scored on me and we switched but the tall, smooth kid was lax and let him score more

Thu-Decent long run for an hour, used my old gray racing flats, 3200 W to 6200 S across Bangtr & thru 'hoods, out to 4800 W and back, felt the joy, consistent pace, cold face, cooled the fire

Fri-rest but worked 2 jobs for 2 schools and went to Presbytery, story in itself

Sat- Had a plan to take it easy for 2 miles and then push it, especially with the wind on the way back. Was surprised to hear 6:48 for 1st mile, knew I was holding back too much but wanted to keep with my race plan so then ran 6:49, opened up after 2 and ran 6:24, figure I was about 20:40 at halfway (clock went by 10 second intervals). I had been running with a guy and mentioned that I just wanted to find someone to trade air with on the way back. Whereupon he, knowing my race plan, hit the turnaround and promptly seemed to put 50 yards on me in about a minute! What? Yeah, what.
Luckily, my friendly nemesis Richard came up and and gave me someone to run with, we played cat and mouse a little but he took the lead and I tried to hang on. I thought that I'd feel him breaking wind but if I was 5 feet from him it felt like I might as well have been 50 feet. We did manage to catch another guy who looked to be 200 feet ahead after mile 4. I stayed w/i 50 feet of Richard and I could see another guy we could catch, after further scrutiny I realized it was my boy BK. I knew I was working hard cuz I did catch him finally but man 100 yards catching someone takes a mile to do! Richard had passed BK and then I caught him w/ probably 4/10ths to go, I said, "It's always hard." He said, "Yup," and promptly strided it out and I couldn't catch him again. I picked it up and started to kick it in w/ .2 left, noticed I was audibly grunting with every breath and tried to just breathe, then realized I didn't care what people thought, even myself, and grunted on home.
Overall I was happy that I averaged just under 7 minutes per mile on the way back and was 21:44 for the 2nd half. Being only a minute slower is comparable to the top guys, including my bro Nate, I just really wonder if I wasn't too slow for the first 2 miles. They were pretty easy, with the way the wind was on the return there was no getting around the efforting that needed to be done so I don't know if I could have efforted much more.

So now it's the rubber match, BK and Richard I beat in the 5, they took me in the 10, and the 15 it's on like Donkey Kong!

The race took more out of me than I thought. My calves were sore til about Wed., partially because of running in racing flats, partially because my mileage is minimal enough that a hard 10K takes it out of me.

Sun- ran to parent's, tacked on a little more along the canal road, just recovering 3m

Mon-30 min run in 'hoods, a total blur as to where I went, partially due to recovery, partially due to emotional meditative state, life is more than running, running helps me meditate, think, pray and cope with life 2.5

Tues-easy run, ran along canal roads out and back, 3m; basketball good, while my running suffers due to outside factors, my basketball does not, I slow it down more and think through offense and defense, what I'm doing and did before, how to defend effectively both my own man and helping out the team, when to shoot, pass, fake, drive; the firefighter labels me as a "drunken ninja" and notices that I'm running around more. I'm down to 184 lbs. since November, that makes a difference

Wed-after long talks with many, subbing at Westlake for Music theory/Orchestra, ran in Grandpa's cemetary, found equestrian and bike trails, ran "in the flesh," did 2 sets of 30 push-ups to round out work-out, 2.5 miles, played ball 3 on 3 with finicky ward, wouldnt be in it w/out crazy arching Tommy boy 3 point shooter, my shot started out poor and got better (no w/u), played against the Never-does-anything-wrong-general

Thu-no motivation, rest needed, 3 on 3 ball, just working the system, mostly won

Fri-skiing at Brighton, got a lot of runs in, stormy but great powder, didn't stop for lunch, did runs with Uncle Doug, Richard, George, explored the poweder in the trees, Milly bowl, Richard lost his ski, once had to hike out 100 yards with George when went too far W. from Millicent, some hip/quad soreness

Mon-can't recall run, probably some burn-out/emo/verbal processing/blurry forget to run

Tues-run w/ Mark at Sugarhouse, one time round, then did some hill repeats on 2nd time round, then L-pull ups, saw Carol, ran w/ her 2 min easy, 2 min cruise for another loop, about 1 1/2 hrs total, 5 miles +, was sore for ball, 4 on 4, plasyed pretty smart, I'm not lazy enuf to guard my guy at the 3 point line, shooter burned me a few times, Steve/Mark?

Wed-raquetball w/ Matt, did bench press, leg press, calves, weighted row, chin-ups, cleans with weighted bar, leg curls, right hamstring sore

Th-w/ Nate from homestead canal to 3rd crossing South, 45 minutes, then 3 hard strides, possible tweaked left knee 6.5m, a little faster pace than I would have gone, marathon +

Fri-rest, was an afternoon PE sub but need some down time, not sure about how I'll feel tomorrow, want to race but the fitness I've gained this week may take away, but in the long run I know I'll be faster, probably good for the 10 miler and the future

Course was great. Warmed up just a mile and stretched by the police car. Had the plan of running easy for 3 miles and then pushing it. We got out and there was an immediate pack of about 20 people that I was running with, I tried to just tuck in but I was a little on the edge of the pack. 6:42 split for 1st mile someone said, then 6:50 for 2nd mile. BK was up in no-man's-land and Steve and Liis joined him. I asked Steve if he was going to break away on the return and he said he was just trying to run even. I was troubled by holding back since I had made such a mistake in the 10K, but at 3 miles I really had to mentally push it to catch up to BK, Liis, and Steve. They had been joined by Ben who was running erratically, changing paces a lot, acc. to BK. I had to employ the mental tactic of counting how many seconds I was away from them and being satisfied that I was closing the gap. 10 seconds seemed to take 3/4 of a mile to close. Once I did catch up to Steve and Liis, I just tucked in with them until the turnaround. Time there was 31:50
The 2nd half was a race to the finish. 1st Devra went by us like she'd come to the race late and was playing catch-up, no one went with her. Then Richard M (fluorescent green/yellow) went by and I tried to go with him. I'd passed him between 2 and 3, he'd been pacing a girl. He surprisingly caught Devra. Nan K had also cruised on by us (orange shirt). I obviously didn't stay with Rich for long, but I stayed with Steve through mile 6 cause he told me we were on 6:50 pace. He closed the gap to BK while I lagged off with Liis tailing me. My sights were set on Nan, followed by BK and Steve, who all were catching Eric G, a tall 49 year old guy in fluorescent yellow/green. (I'd seen him earlier in the week running at Sugarhouse.) My realistic goal was to catch him and between 6 and 7 I got within 7 seconds of them. Then between 7 and 8 the mind/body connection deteriorated and I started second-guessing the fact that I was now racing the distance that has been my long run. Translation, the wheels fell off. Now I was just holding on, I had no one to catch (they were a minute ahead) and no one to run away from (my sidelong glances back didn't reveal anyone). I knew Liis was behind and was prepared to be motivated to go with anyone who caught me, but the last two miles were just the lovely painful blur to the end. I felt like I picked up my pace at the 8 mile mark, only minutely realizing that this was not one mile to go, when I saw the real 1 mile to go I kept on going. We were passing the early starters who were mostly walkers, and I turned around and clapped/cheered for Liis and said, "Let's go!" It's funny cause I know that psychologically it's good to be cheered on but I also know when someone in front of you cheers you that means two things, he still has something left, and he's a nice guy that you feel bad to beat. :-)

Matt J cheered me on and ran me in 2/10ths to go. I remember audibly breathing/grunting pushing myself with at least 1/2 mile to go to the end. My effort seemed to be appreciated by the finishing crowd. I was happy to see a negative split. 31:15 on the return. 6:51/mile out 6:43/mile back. Also was 20 seconds faster than 2 years ago so can't be unhappy with that.

Afterwards cooled down with BK just a little, he told me that he's been racing every weekend. He is a self-described diesel engine that gets a rhythm and plows on. Kudos to him. Didn't get a chance to beat Richard, and Eleanor is out of my area code, she's going to be phenomenal. Got to figure out what my next race is, maybe the half in April, need to build base and enjoy and progress this fitness.

In all a great series, helped me thru some emotional trials I've been experiencing. Following Christ is a painful process, the eradication of sin in myself and others is glorious and freeing and purifying and painful.

Sun - some soreness but biked to disc golf and played the course, more people than I've ever seen, skipped around and shot pretty well, 2m run, bike 2.5m

Mon - ran to course and played, 3.5m

Tue - went on a 50 min long run taking canal roads, ran to end of Bangerter and crossed it, sat on the wall for a while and ran home, then ball, won a lot cuz Joe was shooting lights out being guarded by Bob (old and slow and talk), a little drained 5m medium hard

Thu - no running but had the ball game for the ages, once I got warmed up played w/ Wendel, Kevin and new tattooed guy and we had a 4 game run, they relied on me as the scorer and I came through, mostly medium-range jumpers, a few good layup drives and hustle. We beat both teams twice until Kelly came back and guarded me, then we lost twice, but it was great. I opted out the last game knowing I'd be sore, 3 nights straight of ball, Wended'l having shoulder surgery so it was good to give him a parting victory.

Fri - biked to May's, ran from there to gov. housing, last ran there in winter cold from H's?, along tracks to New Pilgrim church, and back. 45 min, then biked P back in slightly dangerous dark evening, 4.5m

Sat - from Draper Park to Corner canyon high school, incredible facility, ran 3/4 mile on track around yelling hs'rs then around perimeter and back, stretched while SUV watched, night run, 1 hr, 5 m

Wed - ball near 70th, played longer than wanted to, still getting a feel for the lighting and rims, made one great full court assist to Sean, felt worn down, want to work on being able to drive

Th - was working all week Ren. Academy, ball was 21 w/ Kelly and friend, won one game, efficient movement, wanted to run but also felt like it w/ wear me down more

Fri - great run from R. Ac, jumpting fences in new neighbor houses and then some pull-up, dip sets, then back on Murdoch canal trail, was it worth it? No for career, yes for fitness

W/u with Matt Poulson, very cold, rode bus up and ran uphill. Then loops in the parking lot and down, wind coming down the canyon. Was ready to go.

Started on the 3rd row and strode out to 1st right turn out of This Is The Place Park, could see string of runners out ahead of me. Felt like I was going pretty fast but holding back and cruising. No mile markers which is probably good, started to pass peeps 1/4 mile in, altogether probably passed 20, started up the hill towards ARUP, here I passed Eleanor and Sarah, didn't know who they were so didn't know how good I was doing, could see Bill and Joe out ahead, Bill be-bopping and Joe tracking. Continued to pass until we got onto road back to Sunnyside, then could see two guys 40 yards ahead, Jacob and another young'un. After turning onto Sunnyside, I thought I was doing pretty well, felt like I was maintaining a good pace, breathing fast but strong, in fact, I think I could have pushed a little more thru here, I was thinking we were close, had a momentary lapse and pause after thinking we were a lot further to the finish (in my head thinking there's a long way b/w Foothill and East High, but it's really not, a few stoplights). I was ready to push for home and saw the track and had caught up to Jacob, got into a sprinting pattern, tracked Jake thru 100 to go and then opened up, sh probably have sprinted from 200 out, need to work on knowing how far I can sprint but it was lovely to have a track to sprint on, passed Jake amidst cheers for him and hit home in the fastest 5K of my adult life. I don't really think I'm in the best shape I've ever been in but I do think I'm not terribly far. Low-mileage but active guy just 25 seconds off fastest flat 5K. But this really is a downhill, not sure how far it drops but it's precipitous.

Afterwards cooled down on the grass and with Joe and the Alta team, chatted w/ Eleanor and Sarah and Austin Banz, golfer going to the Y who was just behind. http:/Results here

Wed - Jazz game, they put forth a good effort but lost to a deeper and more experienced Memphis team. Jazz Bear did everything he could but half-hearted Jazz fans in a 2/3rds filled arena didn't stand up. No shame in trying hard and failing, only shame in not learning from failure and not progressing.

Thu - Birthday present to myself was locking keys in car at Smith's and running home, biking back, picking up B & P, running back and biking home w/ a Mt. bike excursion to Arcadia to register P. Nice. Figure 2.5 miles running, 3 biking

Fri - ski after 3, 8 inches 2 days but spring powder, wet and slow, found great tree run left of face when followed 3 young guys, some trampoline with Phin, can do all I used to except backwards roll from back position, that's a neck breaker, plan to get better in TN for vacay and w/ kids

Mon - lots of errands, but no running, stayed up late reading Linsanity & Muggeridge's Jesus, The Man who Lives

Tues- moderate 42 w/ Nate, ran to Liberty and around once, stinger in left foot mid-metatarsul, ran in new Fitsole Nike shoes, too much flex?, got numb after awhile, thru business district, grass, then park where had had lunch w/ Boyd's. 5.5 m; no ball cuz of sore foot; slept w/ toe spreader on left ft.

Wed - biked w/ P to homestead, Fedex, home, bank, homestead, 9.5m, risked ball w/ 70th stake guys, talked w/ Sean the workout beast after, lost one, then won two, getting serious, then won but still sometimes watch instead of jump/defending, esp. gets-hurt-every-time-but-plays-best guy (he hurt his thumb), had a few good lefty layups, felt really energetic, foot didn't hurt, toe spreader again

Thu - played ball w/ Steve on 54th, 4 on 4, lost one to him then hustled w/ 19 yr old and lean runner in black and won some, but Steve and fast smart guy won the last w/ smarts, a little un-energetic at first but felt strong through end, talked w/ Steve for long time, religion and politics, ;-) ran?, had final closure w/ H. nite before

Fri - w/ Nate to Sugarhouse around once, 30 min. back thru park, a little faster, overcoming ball, 4 m

Sat - at Nate's Ogden half, biked fr finish to 2 mile, saw Nate and crew, saw BK, then Don, Harry Hoover, back to 8 mile, took Nate's black longleeve, then also Don's flourescent green and Rochelle's white, dialogue w/ Carol Cab, Roch beat her, ran 1:29! W/ dad and Ben and Fezzik, awesome, figured I biked 35 miles total on Nate's bike, then veged at homestead watching Kentucky and UConn beat Wisco and FL, killers and Shabazz

Sun - biked w/ Nate from homestead to JRParkway down to 87th, then back up off 70th up 22nd W, then ran to get transitional workout, a little jab w/ Fezzik uninterested, end of canal, then down to Redwood Cemtry, jaunt off NE corner down demystified canal, back pushing home, 4.5

Tues - ran in Pioneer park for 15 minutes before meeting Matt for Jazz game, they lost to efficient shooting Mavs by 10, then ball where played on winning team for most part 2 miles

Wed - tired fr swamp coolering, long sleep, Thu - biked for maybe 5 then ran once around block, last w/o b4 duathlon, then ball where we had 4 vs 5 then 5s w/ Steve, only lost one game, made a few fast breaks at end where wisdom and hustle beats youth, missed a few reverses; 2 m

My overall time was 1:44:43 http://www.runnercard.com/runner/data/29147/5489/Result/Long_Course_Duathlon(M)-Overall.htm

To be fair, I'm sure at least 3 more people beat me since there was a bike course snafu, including Katy Cargiulo who's national class, she beat me on the 2nd run by 1 minute! Started just behind her and passed about 7 watching her put some distance on me doing the same. Got passed by 2 on the bike (guys w/ jet helmets). Almost missed the bike course turn myself, had to make a U-turn and get on track. Pushed it coming back into the wind, good stuff cuz I thought we were ag the wind but it felt good to open up on the way back. Played a little cat and mouse w/ a guy ahead of me before putting him in my rearview. Felt so good to feel good on the bike, not like the inner thigh/soft seat catastrophe last time. Looking back maybe I could have gone faster, really don't know what $1000 bike could do. Got passed by another jet helmet towards the end, dodging short coursers. Relaxed and stretched coming into transition. Killed the transition (1st) cuz I'm already wearing my shoes (toe-clip advantage). Passed 4? on the run, I'm a runner after all. Got 1st in my age, pretty sure that's legit.

Was happy w/ this race. Much stronger than last time w/ an actual 5K this time. What else to say, could I be a decent triathloner? Maybe if I got a gym membership and swam.

While I place the Bible as inspired Scripture as opposed to all other writings, I've recently found some beauty In Mosiah 15:10–13 he comments specifically on Isaiah 53:10 and concludes that believers are the seed of Christ, namely, “whosoever has heard the words of the prophets ... all those who have hearkened unto their words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins…” Furthermore, “these are they whose sins he has borne; these are they for whom he has died, to redeem them from their transgressions.”

Jesus died for all, those who believe on Him are His seed, His children. Peace

Sun - early morning bike to janet's, hilarious that on the way back right pedal completely sheered off coming up 6200 hill, had to left foot it home but mostly downhill, 4 m

Mon - great disc golf w/ B & P, had a great throw on 8 while playing thru a 5 guy group, then ran the course by self after and ran home, did w/o on playground, arm bars, dips, pull-ups, leg-ups, feel sore afterwards, 3m

Tues - hard work cutting pine tree down at dad's, then pretty good ball, won with Joe's shooting, but when I was trying to be what I sh w/ 4 on 4, couldn't find the hole, but hustled, ball doesn't tire me out while playing, but hands are sore from all the manual labor lately, also waking up every morning at 6, things to do, leftover swamp-cooler work schedule, future worry over career, tasks? all the above.

Biked w/ Nate to JRP meeting dad at 33rd then N to end at 80th tunnel, back S took Industrial bridge missing dad with a flat and coming back for him, Nate pumped him up, we did the mile loop near Redwood Rec and came back to flat dad, I booked to 45th to get van to pick him up. Sore and tired after, energy output high

Thu - lunch w/ R. Broggi, played ball w/ Steve, won once w him, 3 on 3, played ag Ronnie, he's faster and puts his body into defender

Ran to start, got some stretching in, touched base w/ Nate, heard Nat'l Anthem, then took off, awesomely ran into Jeremy Swusinski and ran w/ him and friend Bob, did easy 7 minute miles up and down the hills, nice to just relax, the hills could be tough but enjoyed running along the cemetary and down memory grove, started to need a bathroom, walked thru some water stops, then caught up w/ Jeremy and co., lots of people know him from ultras I guess, sped up when say my port-a-potty at mile 9, was at 48:30 for 7 miles, got the kinks out on the john, one girl opened the door on me, good stuff, enjoyed a good 2 minutes rest, :-p, then started to pass some of the same people had passed, Jer Bear gone on marathon course, got into new territory where there was a guy in blue who was cruising, latched onto him, 70:30 at 10 miles, enjoyed the Chillstop cheerers at Liberty Park, I had grabbed a vanilla energy gel and took a little more than half of it, walked thru most water stops until my break but cruised in last 4. Didn't catch blue guy but was encouraging and passing, somewhat of a kick in. Overall happy with race, can't believe Don and Rochelle ran 1:31 1:29 at Ogden half.
Then got on the bike and the fun began, biked back and saw Jonathon (2:05 half), went too far on half course, had seen Fritz (I run 5Ks and marathons at same pace) but didn't see anyone else. Booked back and came to Liberty, saw dad and 3rd placer, also BJ who was crashing, (he said afterwards his quads felt like they were coming off his legs), then a most unpleasant and unexpected sight, Nate walking. He'd crashed at 19, ran for 2 miles convincing himself not to walk but then did. He felt dizzy, I caught him w/ 2.5 to go, I acted as bike guide, calling out "Marathoner coming thru." He stopped to walk once more and thru water stops, but then mentally picked it up and ran in, maybe 8 minute pace in. 2:50 and 5th place. He was angry, he layed down in the grass and I got the others to come to him.

Then Phin and I enjoyed the too loud band and the freebies, Estar had beaten Mark in the 5K and was waiting for a friend's husband, I got specs on him and tried to find him, but then Esther said she wasn't waiting around. Came back to watch Phin, and gave him to Heath when he and Alexis and James came. They got some good play time in while I biked back to Rachel, 2.5 miles back, ran/talked/walked w/ her. Fabulous! She ran 5:24, then got P on my back and biked inadvertantly up to Rice-Eccles trying to catch train. Came back and picked up the red line, then got to parked car near Fort Douglas and got in to go to Egg hunt at Crossroads church. We were there late but P and Amelia still got some eggs, P loved the bouncy house and got his face painted like a tiger.
Happy Easter everyone. Jesus died for all and rose again showing He is our salvation and Lord. May all believe in His free gift of salvation. He is risen, he is risen indeed!

Then jumped in w/ the fast boys for 600, then another w/ Jason and Jamal, finally a 300 w/ Jamal, the easy floater. Then some arm workouts w/ P at playground.

Tues- ran to homestead, biked back, not feeling fast, but got 2nd wind and biked to park, disc golf--one throw on long 17 showing group how it's done, probably sweetest backhand I've had in a while, then ball, felt like I made good passes, one TO but missed some easy ones and never won! Perfect day for a race, 60s and overcast. Small local TN race, didn't look like there was any ringers to lose to. One young brother combination but we started and I ran with a muscled dark Asian guy behind the two brothers. I told him we were the hounds, as we continued on Piedmont I was running easy and caught up to the brothers, the younger one wanted to challenge slightly, but I passed him before Euclid and opened up to run. Up the hill following the cop, good directions and people at every turn. I was 6:40 at the first mile, not sure about the mile marker but I was going slower and it was uphill, highest part of the course. The cop actually missed the turn into the project neighborhoods down Buchanan but he caught me going into Buckner, down the steep hill to Oakview I'd get close to him as I let the hill take me. I felt like I was running at a good pace, of course retrospectively it seems I could go faster but I was pushing, big difference between uphill and downhill, came down into where the 1 milers were entering, got some cheers. Pushed home into parking lot, sprinted in, probably a good time for the course. Feel good about it, but  no competition, looking forward to getting pushed in the shape I'm in. Won $100 Visa card for my efforts, good prizes at the end, free bike rental drawing for 4 gave to Paul and Amber. Excellent local race, 1st ever Caterpillar. 4th race won in my life?

Thank you Lord, for giving me the strength to run, for blessing me with endurance and with a family that nurtures my soul. Thank you for the beautiful Smoky mountains and the town of Bristol, may you be praised by the many congregations there who glorify your name, may we come to adore you more by the beauty of your creation and the grace you show in our lives, the unconditional love and the fellowship we have in the unity of your Spirit, Amen.

w/u on wood chips, very low key race, got Phin taken care of w/ Tricia and started under the banner. 2 HSrs and 30s guy and I caught up to a fellow runner with cap and ran beside him. Told him we'd cruise the first lap and catch them the second. We did cruise and one HSr in black shorts was beating the one in green and being tracked by the 30s guy. We hit the joggers around the top of the park and I ran more in the road, seeing how the amateurs ahead were dodging the crowd. Easily pulled away from cap partner, I told him I'd won a race the week before and the 2nd guy ran 21:00, that's what he ended up running!
The leaders were 50 yards on me, the green HSr stopped to tie his shoe, and then I was third. When we got on the S side I started to run on the walkway and dodge runners, I was a little surprised at how hard it felt, but a race is a race, pulled alongside them on E side and 30s guy let me go, HSr didn't know where the finish was so I told him, he then confided that he felt like throwing up. So I courteously kicked it home down the finish road.
Won a raffle prize too! Bees tickets, played in park with P man and then lunch w/ Kyle and disc golf and helped Mark move his stuff in my basement.

2 Cor 5:21 "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him."

Simple enough verse, what does it mean? God the Father Accepted God the Son's perfect rightousness so we can be holy and be with God forever. Only God could bridge the gap between human and divine. It's not my works or effort, it's my belief in Him, the sent one, Jesus. Amen

Ran the 1K with Phineas, he ran holding my hand. 2 laps, on the 1st lap he started to cry because the bouncy houses were deflated, but I told him they'd be up later. He wanted to let go and sprint in on the 1st lap but I told him we had one more to go. He ran the whole way! I was proud. Kept up a good pace and sprinted in. Not sure of the time, I kinda think 6 minutes, maybe top 15.

Warmed up to wedding lunch park and around. Once we started out I saw Morgan in green and boxer boy settling into 3rd. I was running with long pants black guy Israel in 5th. I could tell that Morgan was a real runner. I settled in, conserving for the turnaround, got past Israel on one of the turns, running the tangents, enjoying the JRP. Came into mile in 5:37 by my watch, not sure if that was right, didn't feel that fast, ran past the young'un who'd tried to keep up w/ Morgan. Halfway around the one mile loop portion near Redwood Rec and I wasn't going to catch the top 2 guys. Didn't even see them the entire way back. Congradulated runners o the way back, Mark was ahead of Esther but laboring, finished it strong, just keeping pace, sprinted in, felt like a good effort with more in the tank. Left hamstring a little tight on cooldown. Jogged/walked back to see E* ahead of impulsive Mark, ran in w/ him. Got a good brick for my effort.

On the walk back to see Ryanne and Shelley Meyers I stubbed my left ring toe on an exposed board and ripped the skin and toenail almost off. Walked back to paramedics and they patched me up. We'll see how it heals. The only exposed board in miles. Crazy stupid. God my right thumb sprained from biking and now left ring toe.

Soli Deo gloria. May He reign forever and may His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Sun - Biked w P to 'rents, walk w Mika and B, disc golf on a windy day, 9 over, generally good throwing, on 14 had a beautiful shot before 2 guys, stuck it horizontally in tree, hard to find 2.5m

Mon - at Sugarhouse w/ club, delayed start hill workout, W. hill (why not grass?) 6 times up, tweaked right foot on 2nd time down grass, had to compensate, ran 3rd w/ older thin guy, ran 2nd place mostly, hard on last one, got a head start on Jason/James? and came in even w/ him, ran over to P, long bathroom in Highland, playground, upper bod workout, 200 yard up? 3.5m

Tues - ball after Millcreed picnic, brought "My name is Phineas" played in Brooks shoes, one game winner, 1.5m, right foot sore,

Wed - good ball w/ 70th ward, 4 t/o 1st game, then wized up and had 3 straight wins, me with 2 gamewinners, 2 2s, then open arching midrange from elbow, walked 2 miles w/ HVPres group and ran .75m, right foot easing into it but got numb and over the pain, left ring toe still hanging on but cop stepped on it and crunched me to burn

Thu - 3 nites of ball, played pretty well, had a string of scoring, but right ankle tender, not full power in flexed position. Not worth ball to not be able to run

Fri- watched kids while Nate/Ry ran, Sat Highland Games, some disc golf, run/walk, Sun rest, Mon rest, Tues ball, played with a lot of energy, ankle seems fine, won one game but then pushed it and made a few good plays but also never scored on my own pushing it, got to match and outscore my opponent, and contribute to team scoring.

Th- ball, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, 54th, matched up w/ Ronnie, not fully on, right ankle sub-par, need to rest it, Fri - walked disc golf, finally trimmed the chaff away,

Sat - w/ slc club, from Wasatch park, saw group running and parked up street and caught up to Doug, good match, just running easy, to side van at 3 miles, out to 5, back to park, ran about 8.5, beautiful course, tender ankle; afternoon swim w/ Phin at Athletic Club

Thu- resting top of foot/ankle sprain, finally played ball at nite, new group of Polynesian guys were there, was on the winning team all nite, scored inside and outside, fast-break layups, good; could feel foot but pushed thru, quite a little early, can push thru pain but don't know why it persists, standing on my feet for 8 hours a day doesn't help

Sat- picked up Jamal, w/u around parking lot, ankle easily tweaked, saw 2 fast guys who I thought would give Nate a challenge, turned out to be Aaron Clements and Hunter formerly of Utah state.

Start was low-key, even Nate was about 6 rows back on the narrow course. Nate was easily out, no contest, then the duo of Utah state, then W. Jordan basketball tall player, then group of 2 green "Beat us if you can" and 2 yellow race shirt young'uns ... and me. About hole 9 on course young blue guy came up and pulled group ahead of me, I had to open up on the downhills to catch up. On the canal I talked w one yellow shirt guy, we were being pulled alond by green guy, blue guy predictably slowed off. Someone said 6:03 at mile 1, it really didn't feel that fast, running easy feeling ankle out. When we got to the canal to neighborhood narrow turn-in, I had to call W. Jordan guy back, he was behind after that. We went by the water-stop and I just opened up to cruise control. Everyone fell back, enjoyed running through the neighborhood U-loops through mile 2, had a few moments where I felt I was slowing down, but resisted the urge to look back and instead focus on going forward. Heard cheering behind me so I knew yellow was 20 yards back at first, but heading into park I knew I was free and clear and 4th place was mine. As it turned out I was officially 2nd cuz Utah state duo followed Nate in missing the turn-in, but instead of running .1 too far like Nate, they went 1/2 mile too far. They were 4th/5th but I'm not counting it.

Picked it up heading into park and opened up to 80% sprint at end. Was slightly surprised by time, matches Bristol time but felt pretty easy and I haven't run all week. Happy with it, imagining what I can do w/ training? ;-)

Talked to duo et al. afterward, went to parade w/ Jamal & Phin. Jamal is 135 lbs., at 40 less than me over 3 miles that's 4 minutes! Guess I'm not too bad!!!

Praise God who is both objectively true and subjectively true, may our minds and hearts and spirits and will acknowlege His supremacy and infinite glory and power.

Warmed up to far side of park where saw Eleanor and jogged with her. Wasn't sure how I'd feel since resting right ankle all week. Could feel it on the warm-up but once race began was great. Started about 3rd row, wide start on road but race not as big as in past. Ran first 1/4 w/ Mel, then eased up hill, legs were feeling heavy, shocked with the speed, but Eleanor came up beside me and ran with me to the turnaround. Nate was sitting in 4th, Teren stalking Steve, Nate drafting James Holt 35 yards back. I picked it up on the turnaround, told Eleanor this is where we pass people. I proceeded to pass 2 guys who were strung  up ahead, then worked my way up to a group of 4 chasing 2 highschool girls who were getting encouragement. I was playing the psychological effort game of push on the downhill to catch them, which I did. We hit the 2 mile mark and I was a little surprised, I mentally negotiated to cruise up the hill to vine and then push. Caught an older guy after the turn and was pushing to catch Emily. Once we went down the hill into the park Em maturely used the hill and it took me around the turn to catch her. Then just a straight shot home, there were two more guys ahead, tall balk and shirtless bandit but I had a decent pick-up and sprint. First saw the clock at just past 18 and was cheered in by fam. My time matches my 2nd fastest 5K time done twice before, though this course was short?!

In all very happy with how I can race a 5K, I know I can push myself so much more and increase my training so much more too. Warmed down around park, ankle a little tender.

Looking for the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Played disc golf a few times, resting foot but I think finally recovering.
Tues- ball, won one game easily, showed new young kid how to uptempo and play, then against my nemesis let him get some easy threes, he does know when to pull the trigger, lost when old guy had to outgun young kid--who was usually open and shooting a few too many short threes.

Wed- rollerbladed with Hubert on Porter rockwell, complete loop to Draper canal and back, very nice, but hammys very sore next day, about an hour; no ball at 70th ward, drove all the way to S. Jordan where used to play near H's with the young athletic crew, found a group of 10, won first game easy showing hustle, missed a few before settling in, feeling great to run but overhustle at times with new crew, then played 4 on 4 ag 3 black guys, definitely over-hustled, but came into it with a few good lay-ups, missed an in-and-out 3 that would have won, instead came back from 20-16 down to tie and then lose a close one. Played w/ two heavier but steady guys and a glasses skinny hustler and almost pulled it off; ankle and top of foot tingly like there was damage but woke up the next day and the ball rehab made it better

Thu-biked w/ P to rents for Boaz' 1st b-day, biked home by self; for ball was wedding at 54th, drove around but no dice until went to 70th and played 2 on 2, let the smaller hairy guy score on some quick drives, almost pulled it off, played with bald guy who hadn't won at all, could get my shot off, but missed a few easy ones and missed some chances

Fri- biked to park, some discing and running, saw Chris and met some others, biked home

Ankle should be good for running again, will do that, my weight is creeping up to 180; don't really feel like a runner, more like a ball player who wants to run

Well said. I'm hoping that staying active is always a good thing. I'm not running as much as I'd like or can, but I'm still pretty close to my 5K PR, but the 10K is a race of truth, I'm hoping to be able to hang in on that one.

Sat - Disc golf with Muhammad, slow walking but I was tired. Took is easy the rest of the day, Sun - more golf, say Chris and friend, biked in, threw under par --till parred :-)

Mon - broke in for some speed with the club, 2 800s, 1600, 2 8s, some 2A HS boys from IL there, Devra immediately showed them the what's what. Was 4th on the 1st 8, 5th on the 2nd, pushing pretty good, 1600 held back with the boys and cruised in I think 5th,  then 3rd on the next 8, and 6th on the final 8 but was kicking is in right close to 3 boys. Devra killed it, allergies and coming back fr vacation and all --only did 5 a day on vacay ;-) I only heard the time on the 2nd 8-2:48, fairly good, running how I feel
Afterwards ankle really sore, ice and meds, didn't cool down or go to playground w/ Phin, he even vetoed getting out when we were close by from the car, fine by me; ankle even more sore with running than ball, but this was a speed workout. Standing for 8 hrs not doing me any favors but got to do stability strengthening and toepoint pushes and we'll see.

As a side note, spending a lot of time w/ Muslim friend talking. He thinks because he's been a teetotaler and non-fornicator he's obeying Allah's commands and will be vindicated at the judgment, unfortunately, he doesn't realize the true greatness of God, you think Allah akhbar? God is all holy, just one sin deserves eternal punishment. Good thing we got Jesus. All praise to the Son for His gift of eternal life by faith.

Th- played some ball w/ Steve and Squirrel and Andy, the guy who didn't miss, very complete game, he never lost 21, good times

Fri - lots of sleep and rest, needed it, Sat - biked watching Nate race Draper Days, lost a pedal halfway thru, then ran 2 easy w/ the studs, then Mt. biked 3 miles up to Silver Lake fr Granite flat, took a long swim and Mt. biked follow the leader w/ the kids, including little black kid on an oversized Mt. bike that followed my every move, then 3 games of volleyball

Got P to Jonathon's and thought I heard the announcer say the race was starting late. Did w/u up the hill and had to (ahem!) do my duty. When I got back to the start the race had gone off, none at the start line, ran 200 yards back to the start and went through the chute. Proceeded to pass 881 people. Felt like I kept a good pace, got a hello from Moriah and Rylee, a cheer from Rebecca and Jason and Esther. Felt hot that first mile, stayed on the outside of the cones for 1st 2 miles, walked thru the water breaks. Felt like I started to coast on N Temple, was telling myself to hold on until the last 2 miles. At this point I probably held back too much. Hit the hill down 3rd E and made a good run, caught up to a 100 yard gap between runners. Cheered on by crowds. When we hit the stretch for home I found myself falling into the pace of other runners. Hard to be motivated by consistently passing people rather than running with peers.

If I'd been a minute faster I would have been 5th in my age rather than 9th (including top 3). But I kept passing. Finally when we hit the end, my thanks go to Braedon Dority for encouraging me to kick the last 200, I opened up and he helped me pass two people, but he sped up the last 100. Had a great time afterward with bro, sis, cousins, friends. Awesome.

Ankle wasn't a factor throughout race but I really need to cross-train and just heal. Praise God for a good body that can run. Thank you for your awesome holiness that I can never comprehend or attain. And thank you for your love.

Some weird top of foot/ankle injury has kept me limited to disc golf and basketball. If I had the guts I'd just stay off it for a week. Weight is creeping up. Disc golf most days but I'm in a slump with that too. Some emotional drama too, spiritual warfare, false accusations. Right foot, tried football cleats to not flex my foot, seemed to work, then played ball on it and it hurt again. In a cycle, praying for freedom.

Always have to do this race no matter what. Haven't run in months but had to get out there. Warmed up a little and was glad to hear that we were actually doing the whole 5K. Had to run around the park once to get the full 5K and then the usual course, except going beyond the cement barriers all the way to the fence like it used to be. Didn't realize the road was still there.
Got started and fell into a rhythm with an older guy, watched one rabbit get caught by the older triathlon lady I've beaten by minutes before. There were 6 up ahead after we picked off the kids. Settled in and felt fine for being out of shape, practice or form. Was determined to keep pace until picking it up at the fence turnaround. Watched those ahead string out and thought I'd probably catch a few on the way home. I picked it up and put the older guy and another guy behind me but then on the hill on the way back my wheels fell off. The two guys passed me and I let them go. Climbing hills is hilarious being out of shape.
Was okay with phoning it in but saw a Portland Marathon girl I'd passed in the 1st mile behind me. Picked it up at the park but was hesitant to sprint. Felt quesy and like I wanted to throw up the water I'd drank, always a good sign. Finished and layed on the grass for a while. The girl behind gave me the approximate time.
Enjoyed the coffee and doughnuts and fellowship. Marvin, my dad and P were all there. This race was no snow and Fall weather. Went to the church after and bought lunch for Marvin and P. Price has gone up to $5.

There's always next year. The problem with life is that it's so daily. That's why I love running. It's pure truth always.

And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come, drink of the water of life freely and without cost. Rev. 22:17
