I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

2 laps around Liberty Park.  They had a small pad at the start but it wasn't really a runner's race, it was a fundraiser.  Ran some to warm-up, had a good warm-up.  When the race started one runner tried to stay with Nate and lasted til the first turn.  I knew it was a race for 3rd. One young runner was ahead and he jumped up to slap a sign.  I was running with another younger peer and I told him that we'd do the first loop easy and then try to catch the guy.  We ran together nicely, I was taking it super easy and we started passing all the joggers and doing some weaving.  On the 2nd loop a HSr came up and went with me to catch the guy.  We ran together and I told him the guy would try to go with us but we had to stay strong.  We caught him just after the 2nd semi-circle turn and then the HSr asked how much further, I told him 1/2 lap and I knew I had the psychological advantage of knowing where the finish was.  We had increased the pace on the 2nd lap but when we hit the last straight before the turn in I stretched it out and then sprinted home.  A good pacer for the day and good motivation to keep getting into shape.  There were a lot of drawings, it was probably a better idea to buy a lot of raffle tickets instead of registering.
