I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Ran in the Sojo Half marathon. Watched Nate be in the lead at 1/2 mile, saw him at mile 3 where he ran 4 blocks farther than the next 12 runners and was behind 2 but quickly passed them. I thought he might be upset but he said he enjoyed running with some people for a bit. He won by 5 minutes over Christine, slctrack. I jumped in with Leah and just relaxed for 3 and 1/2 miles. It was fairly cold so just warming up and easing into it was good. My plan was to go ahead of her and stretch and catch her again but instead I went way ahead and stopped at an aid station and stretched. Have had lower back pain for 2 months, sleeping wrong, bad couch, but my back was okay. I jogged with the 2 hour pacers for a bit before again moving up and ran by a Clysdale who told me to stop speeding up, so I ran with him for a mile. With Leah probably 9 minute pace, on my own, 8 minute pace. When we piled down the hill to Jordan Parkway, I hit the sidewalk and splatted. Hat came off, girl picked up my hate. Surprising but no blood. Sped through last 2 miles but this is where it was hurting, hip flexors and tightening. Finished and walked back to run in w/ Leah. Everyone was there for Nate's finish, Leah, not so much. Lower back tight at end, Phin, mom, Amelia there, big-ball bowling and retrieving the car. Feel great for not having run. Weigh 195. Motivated to carry this to Nick Yengitch.
