I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Mon - discing, with Jo, got rained on, 1m

Tue - ball at top of 36th, played w them before, fast guy who was good at a Spartan race w no training, lost, won, lost?, I play well when I know I'm not the fastest and just play my game, made a great full court pass to Spartan, didn't have my jumper and missed a few right hand layups, 2 hrs, 2.5m

Wed - sore, have to pick my battles, forced rest, need more callousness, youngness wouldn't hurt either ;-)

Thu - nite run to old Kmart industry, found back way into a church, 45 min 3 m; half ct off 13th W, close losses to better teams 4 on 4, then a full court where just didn't take over, 1.5m

Ate too much good spaghetti nite before at PBC, tossed on a campout bet but got good length of sleep.

Cool morning, trying to warm up, felt crimped and inflexible, as I was running around back to my truck the race started, but that was a blessing in disguise as I would be forced not to run with faster runners. Made my way through the field until mile 1, then passing slower. No mile markers, but passed my last guys on the upward block before heading out to lake turnaround. Was trying to reach father/daughter 100 yards ahead, but they managed to stay away. Was just trying to run for 4 before seeing what I could do, enjoyed the fact that there were no miles to wonder about. My calves were hurting and was just holding on until I felt good. As I saw the runners coming back I realized I was in 7th. On the way back I realized I was feeling better, probably didn't realize this until we hit the neighborhoods again.

The couple ahead were getting further away, but I had 5K sloggers to pass, I feel like my last half was faster than the first. After a few turns I realized there was a 10Kr I could pass, a young thin guy who I think was 3rd at the turnaround. Took a few turns to catch him, finally did while going N. Latched onto him, slowing down, he sped up a little, then I passed him. I knew we had a few U-turns before the finish, kept my pace and pushed it in.

All in all I should be happy with this, wasn't feeling great and this will be good training for the future. 30 seconds slower/mile than my previous 5K doubled and that's not bad.

At peace, eternally and temporally.
