I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Tues- risked ankle prob by playing ultimate frisbee. 2 good hrs. at Liberty, made tall Matt mad by grabbing him a few times in the air. But good overall, ankle sore, maybe a broken bone on top of foot?, Nate says buy stiff-soled bike shoes
Wed-biked down to Erv's to pick up truck

Got P to Jonathon's and thought I heard the announcer say the race was starting late. Did w/u up the hill and had to (ahem!) do my duty. When I got back to the start the race had gone off, none at the start line, ran 200 yards back to the start and went through the chute. Proceeded to pass 881 people. Felt like I kept a good pace, got a hello from Moriah and Rylee, a cheer from Rebecca and Jason and Esther. Felt hot that first mile, stayed on the outside of the cones for 1st 2 miles, walked thru the water breaks. Felt like I started to coast on N Temple, was telling myself to hold on until the last 2 miles. At this point I probably held back too much. Hit the hill down 3rd E and made a good run, caught up to a 100 yard gap between runners. Cheered on by crowds. When we hit the stretch for home I found myself falling into the pace of other runners. Hard to be motivated by consistently passing people rather than running with peers.

If I'd been a minute faster I would have been 5th in my age rather than 9th (including top 3). But I kept passing. Finally when we hit the end, my thanks go to Braedon Dority for encouraging me to kick the last 200, I opened up and he helped me pass two people, but he sped up the last 100. Had a great time afterward with bro, sis, cousins, friends. Awesome.

Ankle wasn't a factor throughout race but I really need to cross-train and just heal. Praise God for a good body that can run. Thank you for your awesome holiness that I can never comprehend or attain. And thank you for your love.
