I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Foot was hurting Sun, Mon worked on it surprisingly, Tue went to ball, wasn't going to play but put on old Blues and went for it. Foot pain in stretched right arch feels like muscle soreness needing to be exercised. Managed to play well in spite of it, told by baldy that I'm always in the right position, focused on screening, some rushed shots, some posting up

Wed - ball again, good defense skills (when I can stop); bowled bearded general and Dallon over once, got in Dallon's head a little (he eyed me while making his midrange) 1.5

Thu - too tired, work going well, constant hand work, today was off, fellowship dinner with Brad and Judy,

Fri - biked past Thorin's to 56W then Mt View to 47S and company, beautiful Fri night-time journey, this is life and glory and peace. Scary going downhill on trail back N. Tacked on 40W to 54S and looked at construction, fell at overlook banging right knee and palm, glorious clarifying pain. 1:15 out, 4m

Sat - biked w Nate to T-ville courthouse hood loop, 1 hr, Nate was tired and said he would have walked, had run 2 1/2 hrs over previous days, quick uptick at Redwoods cemetary, too much BBQ chips and ice cream in preparation for Superbowl victory by Eagles ;-)

D/G on Sun Superbowl, taking Thorin out, building up to 10K race, a few shakeouts/a few bike outs. Two times ball? Fri shakeout

AAAAAAAAH! Why does typing a long entry make it disappear?

5 paragraphs and 45 minutes gone.

Good thing God never forgets.

7 minute first mile, BK side by side then forged ahead. Group of 6 with me lagging. Promised myself to hit the water on the way back and go (2/4 mile mark). 21:55 at half, feeling the 3 points to the wind. Pushed it, BK out of reach, DC forgettaboutit. One guy tied his laces, then caught back up and passed no-shirt. I was 37 at 5m and pushing it but just staying the same. Around the last bend and more finally caught no shirt, he encouraged me to beat laces, which I gruntingly did beyond the .2. Can definitely push harder, just don't know this edge with no mileage. Hope to run a minute faster on course through the 15K if foot will let me.

All praise to incomprehensible yet knowable God who reveals Himself through the God-Man who offers eternal salvation to all who simply believe in Him.

Tue - jog til Jo slept, chatted w neighbor about Thorin, then canal E out to near B Elem., chatted w Dump truck drivers near sewer pipe Construction, push through, foot feeling it, 4.5; ball plugging away, last option on offense, played on teams with speedy and new t-ville speedster; how does speedy do it? He'd get to balls beyond everyone, run past the field to rebound and double deke making every breakaway layup. 1.5

Wed - walk disc left-handed favoring foot (been throwing lefty since foot was hurt),

Mon - actual winter snowfall, also on Thu

Tue - Ran around neighborhood with Thorin down 34W to overlook, 40 minutes before Awana, 4.5m; Ball, nary a pass to be gotten, played with big guy poster and blonde brother, (they bickered but then played better) 4 on 4, lost to speedy but also won, played for 2 hours, still foot tender, was the role player, playing in old blue shoes, 1.5

Wed - Got off work a little early, metal-bailing killing it (Thanks Mark). Ran in cold with P to homestead to pick up lift ticket, Grandpa upset P was with, hard to get back but good to push, 4m; ball playing against Dallin, one time one on one, stutter-stepped on D, he made the game-winner on the elbow, talked zone defense with red-shirt leader, (no one's fast enough/long enough to cover the perimeter entirely) missed a few short shots at beginning, but faked D out once, also lost the ball when team wasn't catching up to me as a guard,

Th - skiing Brighton, first up Milly, then met Jon and Leah, hip hurting on the lifts, had to take a break before lunch, good snow, good skiing, good lunch, then Great Western & Snake Creek but wind chill killed me, hands couldn't get warm (even with double gloves) and face chilled. Lodged it to warm up, got out once more at quarter to 4 and called it a day. Was going to ball but needed rest.

Fri - good dinner meal, been watching the Olympics, PyongChang

Race of truth and tragedy.

Arrived at the race with the clan with not much time. Didn't really need a warm-up, at first had to run with Thorin til handed him off. BK caught up before first mile, 7:10, my plan was to go 3 and then go. Not a great plan, just wanting to overcome the disappointment of 10K. Should've gone 6 and go. BK up ahead in group of 4, found a partner to run with, Adam Murray, told him I was going to go at 3. Pushed through 4 and caught 2 guys, stuck with them til Adam caught up, went with him a little, was 34:10 at half, 7:20 pace. The 2 guys passed me and spoke of catching others, Adam proceeded to pass only 3 but ended 18 places ahead. I pushed to catch BK, and caught him before 6, then the wheels fell off. Last 3.3 in 8:05. Watched 10 guys catch me, tried to go with first one, but was just holding on. Glad i did this, just haven't done any tempos. Nothing like going backwards.

Pushed it home after Mel passed me, at 9 miles audibly grunted every other breath, felt better to do it all the way home. Tried precarious cool-down, now I'll rest my foot and try to get the kinks out.

Bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is a means of great gain, having promise for this life and the life to come.
