Goal Type:

Age Division Winner

Running Accomplishments:

Eden 10-miler 65:47

Half Marathon 1:26:17

5K 18:01

I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Discing cautiously. Mon - Labrum park, run short with Amber, walk w B, throwing discs and then to T-ville, disced the course well, dinged basket 2 pole.

Wed - group on 70th moved to Wed, played like a chump, hard to get a rhythm when only get the ball if I rebound, forced a shot, got stolen when i drove around--got to focus on what the defense does to my initiative. Ambi-lefty looks like he's barely moving and no one's guarding him. Felt good, talked to a guy about HIT workouts--he's lost 60 lbs.

Thu - jogged to be ready for ball, played at park w Jo enjoying gloves, then ran around and to truck, 1.5m; ball was good, pretty much won all but one, husband-wife team showed up, I guarded fundamentals girl, she got by me on some screen right drives, bank shot money. Also faked me up once and drove around for the game winner. But then my teams won, was getting ready for one last game when we called it, good thing cuz I was pushing it. But I felt good running around (since I haven't broken down myself with training). 1.5

Once last Sun did a bike ride w P where he cried many times, up the hill to overlook, trails, climbed hill, out neighborhoods and around to park where he waited while I biked home, 2m

Fri - got out finally, ran around neighborhood with P on bike to construction, hiked up and across 53rd to overlook, trail to fence hole, roads/grass home; 45 min, 3.5

Sat - at Draper, ran w P to see Zebra, then some loops around the park waiting for club, one loop with not Neal, short, gray, mustache, stretching in parking lot and double breakfast at skinny Jon's (?), talked tri technique, 3.5m

Sun - disced in muddy, crowded, went til could feel it in hip and slightly longer, only made 3 good throws, left feels more natural, run with Nate down Turpin's to g/c and loop within through the mist and soggy grass, vunderbaugh, back up thru firehouse neighborhood, 40 min, 5.5

Monday - 2 mile run with Nate and on bike while he ran an hour and a half.
Tuesday - shake out in the morning all in the evening, drove around till finally went back to top of hill Ward, ran long and felt good. Speedy guy is amazing, I made some smooth jumpers, and guarded one of the twins, his "one, two" motto for shooting long, he does get his feet under him and shoots well.
Wed - greasing the joints run in the morning, w/ B Kearns JRP, saw Thorin for the first time, 2 m up, ball w 70th, felt stiff but warmed up and ran well, short games, middlin', 1.5m
Thu - rollerblade w/ fam, good to work out hip flexor, work is long, was too tired to ball
Fri - disc in morning?, 1m, then got Thorin, puppy love, nervous but acclimated quickly
Sat - one time b4(?) biked and disced, 1.5m

Closing out the Lifeway store.

Did a 2m run with Nate then biked with him while he went 1hr and 1/2 JRP. Ball Tues/Wed/Thu(?) good zone work on Wed, run and gun Tue, trying to be point control Thu, guarded the girl--would rather have her fundamentals on my team than her husband's better athleticism. Played with Jacob's brother, got on good team that won as we played our game.

Sat - treadmill at Nate's, 4m, snow on the ground, barely at 6.2 mph (7:30 pace?)

Wed - shakeout; got on good team w shooter and scorer (Dallon and mustache?) made my 3s and mid-range; winner winner chicken dinner; 1.5

Th - shakeout; shorter ball, on Carlos' team, play well should win, 1, new basketball shoes from Nike outlet

Did some warmup seeing old friends, Dale Cable, Crocs guy, speedy guys, BK. Felt pretty good, Dale said I looked fast. We started and Dale was ahead by about 10 yards, I was in NML but BK came up and we ran together. He and I close to a soccer girl stalked by 2 behind. 1st mile in 6:27, a little fast but it seemed fine. I was feeling good, biding my time for the turnaround. Talked to soccer girl on the way to the turnaround. They had the water on the wrong side so people were turning the wrong way but we corrected them. I picked it up and passed Dale and left my group.

Now I was 100 yards off Michells Simonaitis and 2 guys. The 2nd mile came quickly, 12:54, on good pace. I maintained the pace, which was really just even pace and was catching up. I noticed my right foot hurting in the arch. The last mile is always long but as we came around the turn and I had to work to catch a guy, about 1/4 mile from the finish. Saw Nate and really tried to pick it up the last .1, say P and Thorin and sprinted in breathing hard. Was happy with my time and the way I pushed myself--30 seconds faster than Thanksgiving?! Consistency is key.

Afterwards my foot was hurting so didn't cool down with Dale, got a massage and he diagnosed right hip flexor tightness, feels like I strained something in my foot, can't walk on it w/o pain. Will use crutches to try to heal it before work on Monday.
